Is this actually affordable for a normal person?+
For a short scenic flight, yes. Per-seat pricing on shared sightseeing flights typically starts around £180–£250 per person, and a whole light helicopter for a 20-minute hop is often quoted in the £700–£1,200 range. Longer charters and larger twin-engine aircraft cost considerably more — the operator gives you a firm quote before you commit to anything.
How many people can fly?+
Most light helicopters used for UK charter carry three to five passengers. Larger twin-engine types carry six to eight. Total passenger weight matters more than headcount, so the operator will ask for weights when quoting.
Is it safe?+
UK commercial helicopter charter is flown by operators holding a UK CAA Air Operator Certificate, with maintenance, pilot licensing and flight-time limitations regulated accordingly. Ask any operator for their AOC number — a legitimate one will give it to you immediately.
What happens if the weather is bad?+
The pilot has the final say and will delay or reschedule if conditions are below minima. Weather cancellations by the operator are normally rescheduled free of charge or refunded — check the operator's own terms at the time of booking.
How far in advance should I book?+
A week is comfortable for a scenic flight. For event days such as Ascot, Silverstone or Glastonbury, aircraft and landing slots go months ahead. Same-day charter is sometimes possible if an aircraft is free.
What can I bring?+
Soft bags, a camera and a coat. Space is limited and weight is calculated precisely, so hard suitcases and last-minute extra passengers are the two things that cause problems on the day.
